The Chevy Chase canyon area was at risk over the past 80 years of having the beautiful golf course and country club become a landfill, the site for hundreds of apartments, a place where tiny shacks were jammed in between the existing homes, a new location for an elementary, middle and high school…but a small and vocal group of residents have protected the golf course and country club over the years. They are well-known, even by Glendale City Council, as the hornets nest you don’t want to stir up! In today’s conversation with Graeme Whifler, a board member of the association, you’ll find out about:
- How the Chevy Chase Estates area first began and the vision of the original developer for the area.
- What effects the stock market crash in 1929 and the Great Depression had.
- How and why the Chevy Chase Estates Association came about.
- All the times that the golf course and country club were at risk over the years and what the association did to make it harder for us to lose it.
- Why the association has a reputation even with the City Council as being a group you don’t want to get angry with you.
- The right way and the wrong way to try to do a construction or remodeling project in the Chevy Chase area (also applies to almost any area).
